What Are the Benefits of Shockwave Therapy?

Discover the transformative potential of shockwave therapy for various medical conditions. This innovative treatment offers numerous benefits for pain relief and tissue regeneration. These include:

  • Accelerated healing and tissue repair
  • Noninvasive and minimal side effects
  • Reduced inflammation and pain sensation
  • Improved blood circulation and nutrient delivery
  • Enhanced range of motion and mobility

Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT), is a noninvasive treatment used to help relieve chronic pain in the musculoskeletal system. It's often applied to various foot and ankle issues such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, and other tendon or soft tissue injuries. Those who might be a candidate for this treatment include those with chronic pain and certain diagnoses such as plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, Achilles tendinopathy, or other tendon-related injuries. Shockwave therapy may also be an appealing option for individuals seeking nonsurgical options or who have not responded to other treatments. Shockwave therapy is generally not recommended for pregnant women, especially therapy applied to the lower back or areas close to the uterus.

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

During your treatment, the handheld device will be moved over the treatment areas while sound waves penetrate the skin. As the handpiece is moved over the treatment areas, beams of energy will move into the damaged tissue. This energy will help to increase blood circulation and drainage to reduce inflammation, break down scar tissue, promote healing, and relieve pain. While not painful, you may experience some mild tingling during the treatment process. Treatment sessions are completed in-office and take around 30 minutes to complete. Once your session is complete, you will be able to leave our office and return to your regularly scheduled activities. Although you may notice some improvements after a single session, most patients require multiple sessions for optimal healing. The number of sessions you require will be unique to your individual needs and can be discussed at your initial consultation.

I had a lot of pain at the back of my heel, and imaging showed that I had a partially torn Achilles and a bone spur behind the tendon. I went to an orthopedic surgeon (not at this practice) who told me I needed to learn how to deal with the pain because nothing could be done. I went to Dr. Blue for a second opinion and I'm glad that I did! Dr. Blue took the time to actually listen to me. I never felt rushed during my appointments with him. Unfortunately I needed surgery to fix the problems, but now, three months later, I'm feeling so much better! His office staff is also great and very friendly. Altogether a wonderful experience and I highly recommend Dr. Blue.

About Us
What is shockwave therapy?

Sometimes called extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), shockwave therapy is a noninvasive medical treatment for chronic pain in the heel and other areas of the foot, ankle, and lower leg.

Approved by the FDA, ESWT uses high-intensity sound waves emitted by a special device through the skin without incisions, sedation, or anesthesia. When properly applied by a skilled podiatrist, this therapy can be very effective in:

• Reducing inflammation

• Breaking down scar tissue

• Promoting natural healing responses to repair and restore damaged tissues

Shockwave therapy is also used to treat pain in other areas of the body, including the neck, shoulders, and back.

How does shockwave therapy work?

Shockwave therapy uses highly focused waves of sound energy to target specific areas of tissue where damage has occurred. These sound waves create very small areas of controlled damage that work to stimulate the body’s natural healing responses. Plus, the waves promote better circulation and drainage in the area to help reduce inflammation and support optimal healing. The focused nature of the delivery system ensures that surrounding healthy tissues are unaffected by the treatment.

What happens during a shockwave treatment session?

Your physician performs shockwave therapy right in the office using state-of-the-art equipment specifically designed for podiatric treatments. During a treatment session, your provider will apply a special handpiece directly to the area of the foot or ankle that’s symptomatic. As the device emits focused beams of sound energy, your doctor will gently move the handpiece across and around the treatment area to ensure every area receives attention.

You may experience some mild tingling sensations during treatment as the energy is delivered to the treatment area and penetrates the damaged tissues to begin the healing process. Most treatment sessions take about a half hour to complete, depending on the area that’s being treated. It takes about 1-3 months to feel the full effects once the injured area has healed.

How many treatments will I need to provide long-term relief?

Although most people feel some degree of relief from painful symptoms even after a single treatment, the majority of patients need several treatments to achieve meaningful, long-term relief of more severe symptoms. The team at Colorado Foot + Ankle Sports Medicine usually provides additional treatments spaced about a week apart to promote continual healing. There’s no downtime after treatment, so you’ll be able to return to your normal routine immediately afterward.

Is shockwave therapy painful?

The intensity of shockwave therapy can be adjusted to the individual's tolerance level. While the procedure may cause discomfort during the application of shockwaves, it is generally well-tolerated, and the discomfort is temporary.

How long does a shockwave therapy session take?

The duration of a shockwave therapy session varies depending on the specific condition being treated. Sessions typically last between 15 – 30 minutes. The number of sessions required can vary based on the severity of the condition and the individual's response to treatment.
